Emerson and Universal Mind (e-Book)

EMERSON AND UNIVERSAL MIND
by Richard G. Geldard

“A brilliant, forceful, cogent, eloquent and personal brief for the essential validity of the great Neoplatonic doctrine of ideas, and a wholly believable effort to place Emerson firmly in that tradition.”

ROBERT D. RICHARDSON
Author of “Emerson, The Mind on Fire”

_______________________________

In 1870, the new young president of Harvard College, Charles Eliot, in an effort to expand and strengthen the study of philosophy, established what he called the University Lectures and invited Ralph Waldo Emerson, among others, to give a series of eighteen lectures of his own choosing. For Emerson, this was an opportunity to summarize his life-long vision of Idealism, a vision which had formed the central set of principles in what came to be known as New England Transcendentalism.

Emerson’s experience as part of this course was hardly comfortable. He was under tremendous pressure to work quickly and to fit his material into the overall series of lectures. As it turned out, his proposed series of eighteen became seven and the material itself was not a survey of world philosophy but a summation of Emerson’s theories on the nature of the mind.

Over the years scholars have tended to minimize, even to the extent of total neglect, what remains of these late lectures, assuming that Emerson’s intellectual and expressive powers had diminished, rendering this material irrelevant. However, his good friend, editor, and biographer James Elliot Cabot, whose task it was to gather Emerson’s papers into some order, said this of Harvard’s invitation to lecture: “Emerson welcomed the proposal as an opportunity for taking up and completing his sketches of the ‘Natural History of the Intellect,’ which he appears to have regarded as the chief task of his life.”

Given Cabot’s observation here, this commentary intends to give serious attention to what remains of these lectures in order to fill a valuable gap in Emerson’s attention to the laws of the mind and by extension also provides a more accurate and complete assessment of Transcendentalism as an important contribution to the history and influence of American philosophy.

Energy As The Blood of Creation

THE VITAL BODY – LECTURE 2 of 10

— The Mystical and Medical Philosophy
of Paracelsus: Universal Energy
— The Seven Great Gifts of God: Exploring Personal Potentials
— Earthquakes as Related to Crises in Human Society
— Racial and National Karma

The first step in the study of the Ancient Wisdom Teachings is not the “quest for knowledge,” but the preparation of the self to “receive knowledge.” This is the first obstacle faced, where most truth-seekers make their first mistake. With their eyes turned toward the heavens, they rush ecstatically toward “illumination,” only to stumble, like Thales, “into the ditch of their own unprepared-ness.”

The desire for wisdom is in itself the most commendable of human endeavors, but in too many cases this desire comes to nothing through ignorance and misunderstanding. We must not only earnestly and unselfishly desire truth, we must create within our own nature the ethical environment suitable for the reception of spiritual knowledge. Before it is possible to perceive clearly the mysteries of the inner life, one must develop the faculties for this perception.

.
THE FOUR NATURES—LIVING AND LEARNING

This unique lecture pamphlet series explores the four natures of the human body: the physical, the vital, the emotional, and the mental. These lectures were a compilation of Mr. Hall’s own essays, articles and published works, exploring his personal beliefs about the connections between the inner life and the outer person. They are aimed at helping the reader gain an in-depth understanding of the four natures of the human being and the human body. All four aspects must work in harmony to enrich the inner life.

These pamphlets are now available individually at a reduced price of $7.95 each.

Fable of Cupid & Psyche (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Thomas Taylor published his translation from the Latin of The Metamorphosis by of Apuleius in 1822. The most important part of this was the fable of Cupid and Psyche, in which Apuleius gives an account of his being initiated in the mysteries of Isis and Osiris

In the fable Eros, or Cupid, is introduced as the Divine Principle in man and Psyche as the human soul. The morality of this fable is profound and exalted. Sacred and profane love are contrasted and those inner parts of human nature associated with this mystery are beautifully explained. As the plot of the story develops it is obvious that the supporting philosophical doctrines are derived from the secret teachings of the Mystery Schools. The truths involved were then perpetuated by later sects who sought to restore and preserve the older wisdom.

To the modern psychologist who has become aware of the alchemy of human emotions, the account given by Apuleius should be of extraordinary interest. The author points out that the sacred mystery of love has been generally profaned and associated with mortal passion and that the perversion of the greatest good is the greatest evil. The human being must sometime face the challenge of his own spiritual needs; by purifying his own emotions he preserves not only himself but the mortal world in which he lives.

In this photographic facsimile edition the reader will benefit greatly from Taylor’s introduction which presents the true meaning of the fable in a simple and understandable manner. Included in this volume are A Poetical Paraphrase on the Speech of Diotima, in the Banquet of Plato and Hymns to Venus, Love, Neptune, etc.

About the Translator | Thomas Taylor (1758-1835) was a scholar without honor in his own time. Most of his books have long been out of print, but in recent years there has been a strong revival of interest in his writings. In 1969 a definitive work, Thomas Taylor the Platonist, appeared as Vol. LXXXVIII of the Bollingen series (Princeton University Press). Admirers of Taylor have said that other scholars may had had more Greek but less understanding of those sublime doctrines which he both translated and interpreted. This PRS Edition features an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall, and the text appears in the original 17th century typeface, with spelling indicative of the period.

Hymns of Orpheus (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Available exclusively as an PDF download

Aristophanes and Horace considered Orpheus a missionary of civilization; and the Orphic teachings were so molded to the foundation of the Pythagorean Philosophy as to be indistinguishable. It might be said that the Pythagorean system is the philosophical aspect of that which the Orphic beliefs are the religion. This volume of The Hymns of Orpheus is a photographic facsimile of the 1792 edition, translated from the original Greek by Thomas Taylor.

This volume includes: ‘A Dissertation on the Life and Theology of Orpheus,’ ‘The Initiations of Orpheus’ which were invocations used in the Eleusinian Mysteries, and ‘An Essay on the Beautiful’ by Plotinus. These works comprise a compendium of the teachings of Orpheus, beliefs that brightly lit the dawn of Greece. It begins with an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall.

Most of his books have long been out of print, but in recent years there has been a strong revival of interest in his writings. Initiates of Greece and Rome (e-Book)

Adepts in the Esoteric Classical Tradition, Part One

NEW PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

This illustrated work on classical paganism explores the “lost” period of mystical tradition, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, in the search for a better understanding of man’s place in the Divine Plan.

As Mr. Hall states in the preface, “One of the teachings of the initiate tradition in Greece related to the mystery of time. The temple did not divide duration into past, present, and future. Divine and universal laws manifest themselves in an eternal now. Enlightenment belongs to no generation, nor does it increase or diminish.

Initiates of the Flame (Pamphlet)

Written in 1922, when Manly P. Hall was just 21 years old, The Initiates of the Flame illustrates the great thread, the spiritual thread, of living fire that winds in and out through all the religions and binds them together with a mutual ideal and mutual needs: there is but one religion in all the world, and that is the worship of God, the spiritual Flame of the universe—”Under many names He is the same, the Creator of the universe, and fire is His universal symbol.”

A deeply personal and uplifting work, it reveals that we are part of the Brotherhood of all life, all part of the Infinite.

Neoplatonism: Theology for Wanderers in the New Millennium

Neoplatonism seemed to have been one of Manly P. Hall’s favorite subjects down through the years, he spoke and wrote about it frequently during his long career. In the foreword to his book Lectures on Ancient Philosophy, Mr. Hall declared that Neoplatonism was the basis of his own personal philosophy. After years of study and reflection he had come to believe that the doctrines of Neoplatonism had descended to us in a purer form than nearly any other philosophical system — a system that seemed more suitable to the active, extroverted Western cultural mindset. This book is based upon the five-part lecture series Doctrines of Neoplatonism delivered by Manly Hall in 1983 to students at the Philosophical Research Society. Manly Hall believed Neoplatonism’s simple precepts could enable anyone to live a more philosophic life.

  • Part 1 | Proclus on the Theology of Plato – What is the difference between the teachings of Plato and the New (Neo) Platonists? Neoplatonism is primarily to be defined as a motion of Platonism toward theology. In other words, it is the rise of Platonism as a religion.
  • Part 2 | Iamblicus on the Mysteries – Iamblicus is associated with one degree of the Neoplatonic Ladder of development, the Ladder of the Soul, rising from opinion through all the different degrees of intellect culminating at the upper end in Theurgy.
  • Part 3 | Plotinus on the Beautiful – Neoplatonists considered “Beauty” an alternative to the word “good”. Good with a capital ‘G’ was the equivalent of our word God.
  • Part 4 | Porphyry on the Wanderings of Ulysses – The philosophers of the Platonic and Neoplatonic schools favored the idea that Homer’s blindness was symbolic. It indicated not his inability to see on the objective level, but that he had turned his sight inward to the contemplation of things normally invisible.
  • Part 5 | Julian on the Mother of the Gods – The Roman Emperor Julian (philosopher, scholar and mystic), had a great and sublime sense of the dignity of life and was not inclined to accept upon its literal value — he sought a deeper meaning. Thus with the fables of the Great Mother, goddess of the Ephesians, Isis the Mother of the Mysteries, he sought to find this meaning.

Neoplatonism: Theology for Wanderers in the New Millennium (e-Book)

With an Introduction by Richard G. Geldard, PhD

Revised Edition PDF e-Book

Now available for download!

Neoplatonism seemed to have been one of Manly P. Hall’s favorite subjects down through the years, he spoke and wrote about it frequently during his long career. In the foreword to his book “Lectures on Ancient Philosophy,” Mr. Hall declared that Neoplatonism was the basis of his own personal philosophy. After years of study and reflection he had come to believe that the doctrines of Neoplatonism had descended to us in a purer form that any other philosophical system — a system that seemed more suitable to the active, extroverted Western cultural mindset. This book is based upon the five-part audio lecture series Doctrines of Neoplatonism, delivered by Manly Hall in 1983 to students at the Philosophical Research Society. Manly Hall believed Neoplatonism’s simple precepts could enable anyone to live a more philosophic life.

Richard Geldard is a faculty member of the University of Philosophical Research and is the author of books on Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, the sacred places of Ancient Greece, and the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Ocellus Lucanus: “On the Nature of the Universe” and Extracts (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

The group of brief translations and extracts which Thomas Taylor combined in this volume may be considered as dealing with astrotheology.

Ocellus Lucanus, a Pythagorean philosopher, born in the 5th century BC, was perhaps a pupil of Pythagoras himself. His only known work, On the Nature of the Universe, maintains that the universe is uncreated and eternal, and advocates an ascetic mode of life, with a view to the perfection of all that is noble and beautiful.

Taurus Berytius flourished under Marcus Antoninus, and the original of his Fragment is only to be found in the treatise of Philoponus agains Proclus, “On the Eternity of the World.”

Julius Firmicus Maternus was one of the most famous early astrologers and is second in authority only to Ptolemy of Alexandria. He wrote in the fourth century ad, but it was not until 1975 that his principle text, Libri Matheseos appeared in English. The horoscope of the world which is included is from the 1533 edition of the Libri Matheseos.

Sallust: “On the Gods & the World” and Other Works (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Sallust was a neoplatonist philosopher who is said to have written this work for the Emperor Julian in the 4th century AD. Most of Thomas Taylor’s translations have an archaic elegance which preserves the spirit of the older authors in a manner not evident in more recent translations. Taylor added notes and commentary giving valuable insights into the text’s essential meaning. The present volume helps us all to experience the nobility of those early teachers of mankind who labored so diligently to bring treasures of wisdom to their own disciples and later generations.

On the Gods and the World is a concise treatise, generally free of the lengthy metaphysical theorizing of the more detailed Neoplatonic texts. Its aim was in part “to parry the usual onslaughts of Christian polemic” in the face of Christianity’s growing preeminence, to “meet theology with theology.”

This book is a photographic facsimile of a rare 1795 edition and includes translations of The Pythagoric Sentences of Demophilus and Proclus’ Five Hymns. Five Hymns in the style of Proclus, written by Thomas Taylor, conclude this collection.

The Initiates of Greece and Rome

Adepts in the Esoteric Classical Tradition, Part 1

This illustrated work on classical paganism explores the “lost” period of mystical tradition, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, in the search for a better understanding of Man’s place in the Divine Plan.—“One of the teachings of the initiate tradition in Greece related to the mystery of time. The temple did not divide duration into past, present, and future. Divine and universal laws manifest themselves in an eternal now. Enlightenment belongs to no generation, nor does it increase or diminish.”

The Lost Keys of Freemasonry

THREE-in-ONE VOLUME:
Published under license by Tarcher/Penguin

INCLUDED: “Freemasonry of the Ancient Egyptians”
and
“Masonic Orders of Fraternity” By Manly P. Hall

Manly P. Hall’s classic work on history’s most secretive brotherhood, collected with two additional celebrated volumes on occult Masonry.

Freemasonry is the subject of perennial fascination. The twentieth century’s great scholar of occult and esoteric ideas, Manly P. Hall was a Mason himself and nurtured a lifelong interest in the secret fraternal order, making it the focus of one of his earliest and best-loved books, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry. In this celebrated work, he examines the ethical training required of a Freemason, and the character traits a Mason must “build” within himself. Hall’s 1923 volume is now reset and made available exclusively in this new edition, along with the author’s two further classics on Masonry:

FREEMASONRY of the ANCIENT EGYPTIANS (1937); and MASONIC ORDERS of FRATERNITY (1950).

This three-in-one volume features the original illustrations of each book, for a total of nearly thirty images, including recreations of scenes and rites from Masonry’s unusual history. It also includes a new index encompassing all three titles.

Original Description for LOST KEYS OF FREEMASONRY:

Also know as The Secret of Hiram Abiff, this text was written for the Mason and non-Mason alike. Mr. Hall, himself a 33° Mason, reveals the profound aspects of this ancient Fraternity which has been the source of inspiration to so many individuals through the centuries. The basic symbolism of the three degrees of the Blue Lodge is explained and a chapter entitled “The Egyptian Initiate” is especially enlightening. Illustrated by J. Augustus Knapp.

Original Description for FREEMASONRY OF THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS (still available in the original paperback edition):

Interpretations of the Freemasonry of ancient Egypt are set forth as revealed in the teachings of the State Mysteries, including Egyptian magic, the Osirian cycle, the secret doctrine of Egypt, and the initiation of Plato. The appendix is a restoration of the ancient Egyptian mystery rituals, The Crata Repoa, describing initiation ceremonies which took place in the old temples (as translated by Dr. John Yarker from the French edition of 1778).

Original Description for MASONIC ORDERS OF FRATERNITY:

This work is of equal interest to Freemasons and students of the development of secret societies in Western Europe since the Roman Conquest. The principle emphasis is upon the 17th and 18th Century revivals of the Mystery Rituals of antiquity. Such names as Comte de St.-Germain, Cagliostro, and Louise de St.-Martin feature with Dr. John Dee and the French philosopher/writer, Voltaire. There is information about the mysterious rituals of Memphis and the Illuminati, which flourished briefly in Bavaria, as well as the revival of Egyptian Masonry, which inspired Mozart’s opera of “The Magic Flute.” All these conspiracies and counter-conspiracies are as intriguing as a detective story, and much valuable history is concealed in the records of these esoteric books.

The New Consciousness: The Next Stage of Human Development

By Obadiah Harris

This book delineates the evolution of religion, philosophy and science, and how they integrate themselves into the process man should follow to develop further. Through the illustration and interpretation of Eastern philosophies, and the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the Bible, new horizons for both the individual and societal achievement are opened. This is not a book for self-awareness, it is more. It is a universal, positive book about man’s evolution—primitive to civilized has not been enough. Our world is more complex, there is not enough love, there is no lasting peace. Man must take another step, this book points the way.

The Red Book of Appin

By Gen. Ethan Allen Hitchcock. Preface by Manly P. Hall

A facsimile reprint of an 1866 edition, the original title reads, “The Red Book of Appin; A story of the Middle Ages, with Other Hermetic Stories and Allegorical Tales. A New Edition, Enlarged by a Chapter of the Palmerin of England, with Interpretations and Remarks upon the Arabian Nights’ Entertainments.”

The author, Ethan A. Hitchcock was one of many Western thinkers to explore the abstract realm of archetypal symbolism, and his work was considered an advance for his time. Fairy tales and folklore, like Oriental mandalas, often had secret meanings and that they simulated the thoughtful mind to explore the mysterious world of the subconscious.
