Emerson and Universal Mind (e-Book)

EMERSON AND UNIVERSAL MIND
by Richard G. Geldard

“A brilliant, forceful, cogent, eloquent and personal brief for the essential validity of the great Neoplatonic doctrine of ideas, and a wholly believable effort to place Emerson firmly in that tradition.”

ROBERT D. RICHARDSON
Author of “Emerson, The Mind on Fire”

_______________________________

In 1870, the new young president of Harvard College, Charles Eliot, in an effort to expand and strengthen the study of philosophy, established what he called the University Lectures and invited Ralph Waldo Emerson, among others, to give a series of eighteen lectures of his own choosing. For Emerson, this was an opportunity to summarize his life-long vision of Idealism, a vision which had formed the central set of principles in what came to be known as New England Transcendentalism.

Emerson’s experience as part of this course was hardly comfortable. He was under tremendous pressure to work quickly and to fit his material into the overall series of lectures. As it turned out, his proposed series of eighteen became seven and the material itself was not a survey of world philosophy but a summation of Emerson’s theories on the nature of the mind.

Over the years scholars have tended to minimize, even to the extent of total neglect, what remains of these late lectures, assuming that Emerson’s intellectual and expressive powers had diminished, rendering this material irrelevant. However, his good friend, editor, and biographer James Elliot Cabot, whose task it was to gather Emerson’s papers into some order, said this of Harvard’s invitation to lecture: “Emerson welcomed the proposal as an opportunity for taking up and completing his sketches of the ‘Natural History of the Intellect,’ which he appears to have regarded as the chief task of his life.”

Given Cabot’s observation here, this commentary intends to give serious attention to what remains of these lectures in order to fill a valuable gap in Emerson’s attention to the laws of the mind and by extension also provides a more accurate and complete assessment of Transcendentalism as an important contribution to the history and influence of American philosophy.

Healing, the Divine Art (e-Book)

NEW PDF e-Book

Now available exclusively for download!

Sickness, in ancient times, was due largely to ignorance of the physical laws governing health. In the modern world, sickness is more often the result of ignorance of the laws governing the spiritual, mental, and emotional forces operating in people’s lives. Manly Hall believed that in our effort to conquer externals we have failed to meet the challenge of the internal existence.

The purpose of this book is to make available in one volume a wide variety of evidence bearing on the theory and practice of Metaphysical Medicine, to point out certain broad and invariable principles that bear upon the practitioner and his practice, while remaining uninfluenced by an author’s addiction to the teachings of some particular group or sect. There is no doubt that a considerable part of so-called spiritual healing is, in reality, nothing but suggestion therapy, and the results obtained arise from a sincere conviction that such results can be obtained.

This book is divided into two sections, of which the first is historical, and the second technical and clinical. The historical section, however, is far more practical to present day problems than might at first appear. Most of the material which it contains relates directly to beliefs held at the present time. Beneath a thin coating of modern terminology the most primitive convictions concerning health and sickness are in general circulation today. This includes such subjects as: the practices of Witch Doctors and the Native American medicine priests; the diagnosis of dreams as practiced in Greece by the followers of Asclepius, god of medicine; early clinics of Hippocrates; mystical healing by the early Christian church; esoteric physiology and anatomy; the pineal gland; magnetic healing; faith therapy; mental healing; and finally, case histories focusing on the psychological factors contributing to illness.

Initiates of Greece and Rome (e-Book)

Adepts in the Esoteric Classical Tradition, Part One

NEW PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

This illustrated work on classical paganism explores the “lost” period of mystical tradition, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, in the search for a better understanding of man’s place in the Divine Plan.

As Mr. Hall states in the preface, “One of the teachings of the initiate tradition in Greece related to the mystery of time. The temple did not divide duration into past, present, and future. Divine and universal laws manifest themselves in an eternal now. Enlightenment belongs to no generation, nor does it increase or diminish.

Masonic Orders of Fraternity (e-Book)

Adepts in the Western Esoteric Tradition, Part Four

NEW PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

This work will be of equal interest to Freemasons and students of the development of secret societies in Western Europe since the Roman Conquest.  The principle emphasis is upon the 17th and 18th Century revivals of the Mystery Rituals of antiquity, and includes such personages as Comte de St.-Germain, Cagliostro, and Louise de St.-Martin, as well as Dr. John Dee and the French philosopher/writer Voltaire. Included in this volume is information about the mysterious rituals of Memphis and the Illuminati, that flourished briefly in Bavaria, as well as the revival of Egyptian Masonry that inspired Mozart’s opera of “The Magic Flute.” All these conspiracies and counter-conspiracies are as intriguing as a detective story, and reveals much of the valuable history concealed in records of esoteric books.

Meditation Symbols in Eastern & Western Mysticism (e-Book)

Mysteries of the Mandala

New PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

The fruition of a lifetime of study and interpretation of Eastern and Western mystical symbolism, this classic text explores meditation symbols throughout history in thirteen profusely illustrated chapters. Highlighting such topics as—meditation symbols, meditation, the experience of reality, the Lotus Sutra, and the mystical symbols of Jacob Boehme and other alchemists.

“In order to understand mandala disciplines it is necessary to understand the difference between intelligence and intellectualism. Intelligence is an innate integrity abiding in the soul, and intellectualism is an education of the mind by external study and training. Most mandala diagrams were designed to release internal integrity, whereas the systems of schooling now extant attempt to convert the mind to the acceptance of prevailing doctrines and opinions.

“The purpose of the present book is to emphasize the cultivation of that integrity without which no nation or individual can survive the pressures of a dominant economic materialism. The only solution to modern dilemmas is what Mohandas Gandhi called ‘the victory of soul power over brute force.’ Through the development of meditative disciplines, the sincere person can escape from the shadow of materiality and find the fulfillment of his hopes and aspirations in the light of the ancient way of the sages.

This collection of essays details the early work of Johannes Kelpius (1673-1708), a German Pietist and mystic, William Penn (1644-1718), and others in Colonial America as they made a valiant effort to dedicate this world, this hemisphere, to the fulfillment of the prophecies of the ages. Transcendentalism has been described as a philosophical and religious democracy, a part of our heritage that we ought not forget. Also discussed is the connection between American mysticism and Ancient Greek and Alexandrian classical philosophy as seen through the prism of early mystical Christianity.

Nature, by Ralph Waldo Emerson (PRS e-Book Edition)

Emerson’s first published work | published anonymously in 1836 in an edition of 500 copies, this little book became important to the small group around Boston that considered themselves Idealists, and Emerson would soon become the leading figure in the movement later known as Transcendentalism. The book addresses Nature from the “ground up,” beginning with Commodity and ending with Spirit, with a coda entitled “Prospects.” Emerson begins where his readers find themselves: the here and now, and then progresses to what he called “higher nature.”

The approach has the effect of re-directing preconceived notions of what constitutes reality and faith and truth. Rather than directly confronting existing traditions, Emerson preferred to find new, refreshing language to describe a different path, which he called Idealism.

The Introduction to Nature establishes this approach when it asks: “Why should we not also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should we not have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs?”

Neoplatonism: Theology for Wanderers in the New Millennium (e-Book)

With an Introduction by Richard G. Geldard, PhD

Revised Edition PDF e-Book

Now available for download!

Neoplatonism seemed to have been one of Manly P. Hall’s favorite subjects down through the years, he spoke and wrote about it frequently during his long career. In the foreword to his book “Lectures on Ancient Philosophy,” Mr. Hall declared that Neoplatonism was the basis of his own personal philosophy. After years of study and reflection he had come to believe that the doctrines of Neoplatonism had descended to us in a purer form that any other philosophical system — a system that seemed more suitable to the active, extroverted Western cultural mindset. This book is based upon the five-part audio lecture series Doctrines of Neoplatonism, delivered by Manly Hall in 1983 to students at the Philosophical Research Society. Manly Hall believed Neoplatonism’s simple precepts could enable anyone to live a more philosophic life.

Richard Geldard is a faculty member of the University of Philosophical Research and is the author of books on Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, the sacred places of Ancient Greece, and the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Orders of the Universal Reformation – Utopias (e-Book)

Adepts in the Western Esoteric Tradition, Part Three

NEW PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

The story of the brotherhood of the Rosy Cross is set forth in this third volume of the Adepts in the Western Esoteric Tradition series. Mr. Hall discusses the origin of the Society, its program of reformation in Europe, and its final disappearance from the public stage, details gathered from the most vital elements of the original authorities. He goes on to detail the landmarks of the Great School and its initiates during the era of social experiments in the Western hemisphere.

The Utopians and their program for a better world, Francis Bacon’s relationship to the Rosicrucians, and his book The New Atlantis, are examined, as are Andraea, Jakob Boehme, Elias Ashmole and other 17th century figures who sought to discover the secret of the Rosy Cross.

Self-Unfoldment by Disciplines of Realization (e-Book)

NEW PDF e-Book

Now available exclusively for download!

Illumination is as natural as life itself, but enlightened living is only possible when we perceive the reason for living. This reason cannot be supplied by the mind or the senses. It can be discovered only through communication with the inner Self.

This book aims to develop on the part of the student the skills of awareness and thoughtfulness. Disciplines not to be practiced as rituals, but rather as inherent qualities — as natural as eating and digestion.

The practice of Self-Unfoldment is drawn primarily from Eastern mysticism, blended with the teachings of Pythagoras and Plato — adapted to the modern Western life. The practice of metaphysical discipline will not remove life’s’ problems, but will help to face and solve them honestly.

The Ralph Waldo Emerson Journals, Volume 01: 1820-1824 (e-Book)

Volume 1 | 1820-1824

The source of this digital edition of The Ralph Waldo Emerson Journals is the ten-volume Edward Emerson edition, originally published in Boston from 1904 through 1914, and comprising over 5,000 pages of material. Emerson used his journals as his “savings bank,” as he called them, to record and then use thoughts and insights for later use in essays, lectures and sermons. The journals hide the seed of an entire essay, but they also reveal more private thoughts and personal observations which never found their way into the Complete Works. In all, the Journals are a fascinating and valuable record of a lifetime of inspiration and insight.

America’s Assignment With Destiny (e-Book)

Adepts in the Western Esoteric Tradition, Part Five

NEW PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

The unfolding story of the esoteric traditions in the Western Hemisphere is revealed in America’s Assignment With Destiny, beginning with the rites and mysteries of the Maya and Aztecs. Parallels are drawn between the miracles of the North American India medicine priests and wonder-workers of India. Also included: an account of the Incas of Peru and their possible contact with Asia; the riddle of Columbus; the role of Francis Bacon in organizing the English settlements in America; and the contributions of German mystics through the Pietists, Mennonites, Dunkers and Quakers. The American Revolutionary period and important personalities of that time are examined, as are the Latin American patriots of later years, Simon Bolivar, Miguel Hidalgo and Benito Juarez.

Fable of Cupid & Psyche (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Thomas Taylor published his translation from the Latin of The Metamorphosis by of Apuleius in 1822. The most important part of this was the fable of Cupid and Psyche, in which Apuleius gives an account of his being initiated in the mysteries of Isis and Osiris

In the fable Eros, or Cupid, is introduced as the Divine Principle in man and Psyche as the human soul. The morality of this fable is profound and exalted. Sacred and profane love are contrasted and those inner parts of human nature associated with this mystery are beautifully explained. As the plot of the story develops it is obvious that the supporting philosophical doctrines are derived from the secret teachings of the Mystery Schools. The truths involved were then perpetuated by later sects who sought to restore and preserve the older wisdom.

To the modern psychologist who has become aware of the alchemy of human emotions, the account given by Apuleius should be of extraordinary interest. The author points out that the sacred mystery of love has been generally profaned and associated with mortal passion and that the perversion of the greatest good is the greatest evil. The human being must sometime face the challenge of his own spiritual needs; by purifying his own emotions he preserves not only himself but the mortal world in which he lives.

In this photographic facsimile edition the reader will benefit greatly from Taylor’s introduction which presents the true meaning of the fable in a simple and understandable manner. Included in this volume are A Poetical Paraphrase on the Speech of Diotima, in the Banquet of Plato and Hymns to Venus, Love, Neptune, etc.

Hymns of Orpheus (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Available exclusively as an PDF download

Aristophanes and Horace considered Orpheus a missionary of civilization; and the Orphic teachings were so molded to the foundation of the Pythagorean Philosophy as to be indistinguishable. It might be said that the Pythagorean system is the philosophical aspect of that which the Orphic beliefs are the religion. This volume of The Hymns of Orpheus is a photographic facsimile of the 1792 edition, translated from the original Greek by Thomas Taylor.

This volume includes: ‘A Dissertation on the Life and Theology of Orpheus,’ ‘The Initiations of Orpheus’ which were invocations used in the Eleusinian Mysteries, and ‘An Essay on the Beautiful’ by Plotinus. These works comprise a compendium of the teachings of Orpheus, beliefs that brightly lit the dawn of Greece. It begins with an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall.

Laws of the Fraternity of the Rosie Crosse (e-Book)

Referred to by A.E. Waite as ‘the greatest adept of his age,’ Michael Maier (1568 – 1622) has the reputation of being the most learned among the alchemists of his time. Maier holds a prominent place among the apologists of the Rosicrucians and is believed to have been in England in contact with Dr. Robert Fludd, also in the forefront of the early circle of those deeply involved in Rosicrucian lore.

This volume is a photographic facsimile of the rare edition published in London in 1656 and may be the only work of Count Maier’s that exists in English. The rules of the Rosicrucian Fraternity in the Fama issued by the order in 1615 are amplified here and the deportment advocated by those unknown philosophers is set forth. Special attention is given to the obligations of physicians and the higher ethics of medicine.

New Atlantis Continued (e-Book)

By Francis Bacon and R.H. Esquire. Introduction by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Now available exclusively for download!

New Atlantis was begun by Lord Verulam, Viscount of St. Alban’s, also known as Francis Bacon, and was summarized and continued in 1660 by a mysterious figure known only as R.H. Esquire. Considered one of the most important of the Utopian writings because it envisions the advancement of all branches of learning in the Western hemisphere. Originally published in Latin in 1624, Bacon portrayed a vision of the future of human discovery and knowledge, expressing his aspirations and ideals for humankind. The creation of a utopian land where “generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit” are the commonly held qualities of the inhabitants. This and other works by Francis Bacon are thought to have been the inspiration for the formulation of Britain’s Royal Society.

Ocellus Lucanus: “On the Nature of the Universe” and Extracts (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

The group of brief translations and extracts which Thomas Taylor combined in this volume may be considered as dealing with astrotheology.

Ocellus Lucanus, a Pythagorean philosopher, born in the 5th century BC, was perhaps a pupil of Pythagoras himself. His only known work, On the Nature of the Universe, maintains that the universe is uncreated and eternal, and advocates an ascetic mode of life, with a view to the perfection of all that is noble and beautiful.

Taurus Berytius flourished under Marcus Antoninus, and the original of his Fragment is only to be found in the treatise of Philoponus agains Proclus, “On the Eternity of the World.”

Julius Firmicus Maternus was one of the most famous early astrologers and is second in authority only to Ptolemy of Alexandria. He wrote in the fourth century ad, but it was not until 1975 that his principle text, Libri Matheseos appeared in English. The horoscope of the world which is included is from the 1533 edition of the Libri Matheseos.

Orders of the Quest – The Holy Grail (e-Book)

Adepts in the Western Esoteric Tradition, Part One

NEW PDF e-Book by Manly P. Hall

The legends of chivalry are veiled accounts of man’s eternal search for truth. These beautiful stories are not, however, merely folklore. They are parts of an orderly tradition, unfolding through the centuries and bearing witness to a well-organized plan and program. Like the myths of classical antiquity, the hero tales are sacred rituals belonging to secret Fraternities perpetuating the esoteric doctrines of antiquity.

The origins of the “Grail Legend” begin with Manes, whose philosophy has surivived into modern times as the driving force behind Christian Mysticism. This tradition was perpetuated though the Troubadours, the Knights Templar of Jerusalem, Taliesin the Adept of Britian, the secret Druid assemblies of Wales, Merlin, King Arthur and the Round Table, the Holy Grail, the Grail Kings, Parsifal and Lohengrin. There are also striking parallels in the search for the mysterious temple of Shamballah, said to stand on the Imperishable Island in the midst of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia.

Sallust: “On the Gods & the World” and Other Works (e-Book)

By Thomas Taylor (Translator). With an Introductory Preface by Manly P. Hall

NEW PDF e-Book

Sallust was a neoplatonist philosopher who is said to have written this work for the Emperor Julian in the 4th century AD. Most of Thomas Taylor’s translations have an archaic elegance which preserves the spirit of the older authors in a manner not evident in more recent translations. Taylor added notes and commentary giving valuable insights into the text’s essential meaning. The present volume helps us all to experience the nobility of those early teachers of mankind who labored so diligently to bring treasures of wisdom to their own disciples and later generations.

On the Gods and the World is a concise treatise, generally free of the lengthy metaphysical theorizing of the more detailed Neoplatonic texts. Its aim was in part “to parry the usual onslaughts of Christian polemic” in the face of Christianity’s growing preeminence, to “meet theology with theology.”

This book is a photographic facsimile of a rare 1795 edition and includes translations of The Pythagoric Sentences of Demophilus and Proclus’ Five Hymns. Five Hymns in the style of Proclus, written by Thomas Taylor, conclude this collection.

Secret Destiny of America (e-Book)

The Epic of the Founding of America by Manly P. Hall.

NEW PDF e-Book

America’s place in the essential progress of civilization is revealed in Manly Hall’s epic on the founding of America, our continent set aside for the great experiment of enlightened self-government. Drawing upon often neglected fragments of history, evidence is presented which indicates that the seeds of this plan for the founding of America were planted one thousand years before the beginning of the Christian era.  Whether discussing the symbolism of the Great Seal of the U.S. or the mysterious stranger who swayed the signers of the Declaration of Independence, here is a book sure to fascinate.  It shows how the brilliant plan of the ancients, concealed from the common view, has survived to the present day and will continue to function until the great work is accomplished.

Emerson lived for another three years after he stopped writing in his journal and died on April 27, 1882, aged 79.
